Extraction

Extraction operations allow you to extract a specific stem (a specific instrument or vocals) from an existing track. This can be used to isolate specific elements of a song.

Note that this functionality is only available when using the tuning model.

How to

The extraction button is disabled if you are not using the tuning model or if there are no tracks in the editor.

To extract a stem:

  • Click on the extract button
  • Select the track from which you would like to extract.
  • Select what stem to extract
  • Click on Extract
  • Your stem will appear as a new track in the editor

Understanding Limitations

There are a few typical challenges you may run into when using stem extraction.

The stem I want is not in the list

This is a limitation of the underlying AI model. The instruments that you see in the list are what is currently supported. Sometimes you can get decent results when selecting something similar to what you are actually after. Try expertimenting with different stems.

Other stems leak into the extracted one

This can sometimes happen. The extraction process is not perfect. What you can try to do is to try the same operation again, because the results are not deterministic. Sometimes it can take a few attempts until it comes out really clean.

The stem that was outputted is slightly out of phase

When extracting a stem you may experience that the extracted audio is slightly out of phase with the original. This is because the underlying AI model does not use a simple masking model, so the generated audio might not be perfectly phase-aligned with the original audio.

For advanced users, this means that you can sometimes not do a simple subtraction of the extracted stem from the original audio.
