Stem Splitting
Stem splitting operations allow you to split a track into its base stems.
MelonSound will split your tracks into the following unique stems:
- Vocals
- Drums
- Bass
- Other
Stem splitting is unique from extraction operations in the sense that the sum of all stems is the original song. Rather than intensely trying to find one specific element in a song this operation will instead try to sort the sound into four pre-determined categories.
Note that stem splitting will require a little bit of extra memory overhead, particularly for long songs.
How to
To split a track into its stem
- Click on the split button in the top menu.
- Select the track you would like to split.
- Click on split
- Your stems will appear as new tracks in the editor
Understanding Limitations
There are a few typical challenges you may run into when using stem splitting.
The stem I want is not in the list
This is a limitation of the underlying AI model. The instruments that you see are what is currently supported.
Other stems leak into the extracted one
This can sometimes happen. The splitting process is not perfect. What you can try to do is to try the same operation again, because the results are not deterministic. Sometimes it can take a few attempts until it comes out really clean.
It crashed due to some memory error
Stem splitting requires somewhere between 1-3GB of additional memory to run (on top the already existing memory requirements). What you can do if you run into memory issues is to either try again, change your settings to be less memory intensive, or try to close other applications that are currently running on your computer to clear up space.
